Work back from available US stock to supplier release and China preparation. Includes a clearly labeled reorder-point example and variant-level planning.

At a glance

Your US stock report shows enough units for this month, but the next supplier batch has not passed inspection. That is a replenishment problem before it becomes a shipping problem. Plan China to US replenishment from the date stock must be available for sale, then allow for each step that precedes it.

Define the finish line

Specify whether the target is arrival at a port, delivery to a warehouse or stock becoming available in the destination sales channel. These milestones are different. A shipment can arrive in the country while still awaiting clearance, appointment, receiving or inventory processing.

For an Amazon FBA shipment, use the destination and shipment information from the current seller workflow. Do not plan around a warehouse address from an earlier shipment. For your own warehouse, confirm its booking requirements, receiving hours and carton reference format.

Build a lead-time assumption by stage

Include production or supplier release, delivery into the China warehouse, receiving, inspection or preparation, departure arrangements, international transport, clearance and destination receiving. Ask which stages run concurrently and which depend on a previous approval.

Use a planning range where uncertainty matters. An estimated transportation period is not a guarantee of the full replenishment cycle. Record the date and scope of a quotation so that an old estimate does not silently become the basis of a new purchase.

Calculate the trigger with explicit assumptions

A simple planning model is expected demand during the replenishment cycle plus a chosen safety reserve. It is a starting point, not a forecast of what your store will sell.

For a hypothetical example, assume demand of eight units per day, a total planning cycle of 30 days and a reserve of 40 units. The trigger is 8 × 30 + 40 = 280 units. The 30 days are an assumption for this example, not a fulfillmentyx transit-time quote.

Compare that trigger with an inventory position that handles commitments and inbound quantities consistently. Do not count an uncertain supplier promise as if it were accepted, saleable stock. A high total can also hide the fact that the most popular size will run out first.

Make the plan at variant level

Sportswear replenishment needs more detail than the total number of shirts. Check the demand and available balance for each size and color. Avoid dividing a purchase evenly among variants simply because the supplier sells them in a convenient assortment.

Reserve quantities for different channels explicitly. Stock intended for direct customer orders should not disappear into an FBA batch unless the account has approved that allocation. The separate guide to shared FBA and FBM inventory explains that handoff in more detail.

Decide how to handle a late batch

Ask what a partial release would actually solve. Moving a small quantity by air may cover a shortage, but only if it is the right SKU, can be prepared in time and arrives before the relevant stockout. Compare the complete cost and timing assumptions with waiting for the consolidated shipment.

fulfillmentyx coordinates China storage, FBA preparation and international shipment planning. Send the SKU-level demand assumption, available stock, supplier release dates and destination requirements to discuss a replenishment plan. Confirm the service and schedule for the actual goods before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same reorder point for every SKU?

Only where the demand and replenishment assumptions justify it. A slow-moving variant and a frequently ordered size can need very different triggers even when they belong to the same product.

Does an arrival estimate include warehouse receiving?

Not necessarily. Ask the quoting party to name the final milestone and identify any clearance, appointment, unloading or inventory-processing time outside that estimate.

Should every late order switch to air freight?

No. Compare the expected shortage, units required, product eligibility, preparation readiness and complete additional cost. A faster transport leg cannot resolve goods that have not been released or prepared.
